(13 jun. 1795, East Cowes, islade Wight, Inglaterra–12 jun. 1842, Rugby, Warwickshire).

Educador británico. Erudito de los clásicos, en 1828 fue nombrado director de la escuela de Rugby, la cual estaba en decadencia. Hizo resurgir esta escuela mediante la reforma de sus programas de estudios y deportes, y de su estructura social (en el sistema de prefectura que introdujo, los estudiantes más antiguos ejercían como monitores para mantener la disciplina entre los más nuevos), convirtiéndose con esto en figura dominante de la educación británica. En 1841 fue nombrado Regius Professor de Historia Moderna en Oxford. Además de numerosos volúmenes de sermones, es el autor de la Historia de Roma, edición en tres tomos (1838–43). Fue el padre de Matthew Arnold y abuelo de la novelista Humphry Ward (n. 1851–m. 1920).
